How to know if therapy is right for me?




If you are reading this post that tells me you are curious. Maybe you have outgrown your suffering and don't know where to turn. Or maybe you want someone to talk to - who does not dump their shit on you in return. Or maybe maybe, you just want a space to uplift yourself and grow into the thriving version of you that you know you are capable of.


These are all possibilities in therapy. And typically, therapy consists of each. It's an outdated myth that you only go to therapy when something is "wrong" and in most cases that is rarely when people find themselves there. For many, the "wrong" happens way before the healing. In true American society - we try to band-aid it, self-medicate it, project it onto others, or avoid it at costs. When that stops working - mental health symptoms show up. Anxiety, depression, and addiction - just to name a few. Sometimes the symptoms are more sneaky - maybe you find yourself in cyclical patterns of self-defeat or shame, limited self-esteem, feelings of hopelessness, etc.


This is for sure a time when therapy can support you. Therapy is a safe space, for you to show up, feel heard and learn ways to support yourself in healthier ways. But this is not the only path to therapy.


You can start your therapy journey as a proactive measure - not just a reactive one. Maybe you sense a breakdown coming, or recognize you are about to have a massive life transition and want to ease the blow. Therapy can help when you want it, not just when you need it.


The beautiful thing about therapy is that it is what you make it. You can shop through therapists if you don't feel one is a good fit ( I recommend giving someone a 3-session assessment), you can share what you want to talk about and you can set goals to direct your sessions. You can also come in completely clueless. I promise - we find things to talk about. Or we learn to sit in the silence needed to grow through internal static and noise.
